David Lynch and Mark Frost’s television series Twin Peaks (1990-1991) was a program that blended television genres and conventions in a way that no series had previously done. Twin Peaks is a procedural, a murder mystery, a horror story, a primetime soap opera, and so much more. The fact that the series briefly sparked an American television viewing phenomenon (with a subsequent cult following) illustrates that Lynch successfully transferred to the television screen his skill for creating uncanny, troubling works of cinema and visual art.
